Executive Vice President, Life and Disability
Stuart “Stu” Rubinstein is a high-energy and success-driven Executive Vice President for Life and Specialty Ventures, L.L.C., its primary subsidiary, USAble Life and affiliate, Florida Combined Life, are companies, which insure over 1.4 million individuals and produce over $400 million in revenue with 600 employees. In his role as Executive Vice President, Rubinstein is responsible for the overall profitability and financial results of the Life, Disability and Worksite product lines.
Rubinstein is an accomplished executive with a diverse background and demonstrated record of developing strategic plans and creating customer-focused products and services. His leadership style inspires teamwork, commitment and is focused on bottom line results. With this experience comes proven success in strategic planning, change management, process design and technology. Rubinstein has held numerous leadership and management positions with national and global organizations where he increased sales and customer satisfaction rates, while driving both technology and cultural change.
Rubinstein has played a significant role at Life and Specialty Ventures, leading the development and implementation of a $40M Strategic Transformation Initiative. To create a strateic five-year plan, he led the effort to complete the high level and detail design for organizational restructure, planning, product, sales and service process reengineering, including significant upgrades to each of the major technology components. Achievements from this initiative have included implementing a new customer service system that is expected to provide a 15% increase in efficiency and increase sales by 15% per year by utilizing innovative pricing programs with refreshed products and services. Additionally, outside of the Strategic Transformation Initiative, Rubinstein’s bottom-line approach has reduced claim loss ratios by 3-5% with a strong focus on managing STD claims. Further he developed and implemented a Health & Productivity program by partnering disability insurance with Blue Cross medical plans.
Prior to joining Life and Specialty Ventures, Rubinstein served as Assistant Vice President, Products and Marketing For CIGNA’s Group Insurance Division, the fifth largest ancillary benefits carrier in the US, which produces over $200M in earnings on $2 Billion of revenue, with over 3,500 employees. At CIGNA, he was successful in setting direction on two new product initiatives during his three-year tenure. Rubinstein also created and began implementing a five-year strategic plan for Total Absence Management product development, based on market analysis, customer feedback and CIGNA capabilities. Rubinstein developed a three-year strategic plan for the introduction of employee-paid (Voluntary) benefits and reduced CIGNA's "speed to market” 50% by outsourcing key services.
The foundation of Rubinstein’s career was developed at UNUM, where in his 17 year tenure, he held a series of increasingly challenging roles, impacting many areas of the company. His team achieved the highest rating for customer satisfaction, managed claim durations and claim accuracy that led to increased persistency of 90% from 83%. In addition, Rubinstein developed local market strategies that focused sales efforts on highly-profitable industries in each territory, which increased sales by 10-80% in target segments. He was also an integral team member during the sale of the TSA product line to Lincoln Financial, maintaining a positive environment and momentum, while keeping employee retention 10% above plan.
Rubinstein has a love of sports and is passionate about personal health and fitness. He organized and developed a fully-funded handicapped hockey team for disabled children with Maine Adaptive Sports. He also held the position of Treasurer and served on the Board of Directors for Community Partners, Inc., an organization dedicated to the integration of developmentally-delayed adults into the local community. In his free time Rubinstein enjoys mountain hiking with his family and playing golf.
