Jim Casey is the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Life & Specialty Ventures (LSV), the holding company of USAble Life and its affiliates. Since joining the company as chief operating officer in 2008, Jim has helped develop and execute on LSV’s strategic vision, delivering impressive levels of growth and profitability for LSV and its equity partners.
With in-depth experience in all aspects of the insurance business, including financial, operations, claims, underwriting, sales, strategy, and mergers and acquisitions/ integration, Jim has brought a unique set of skills, perspectives, and industry credibility to LSV. He has built an exceptional management team with similarly deep expertise and passion for the business.
Jim’s career began as an underwriter at Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB). After earning an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and two years honing his financial skills at General DataComm Industries in the financial and treasury areas, Jim returned to HSB in 1998. He accepted a position as chief financial officer (CFO) of HSB Industrial Risk Insurers, where he was part of the leadership team that conducted the sale of the business to a unit of General Electric. Jim served as CFO of the new entity.
From 1999 until 2008, Jim led the 1,100-employee benefit management service area at Hartford Financial Services Group. In 2004, he led the successful acquisition and integration of the CNA group benefits division with that of The Hartford’s. In 2006, he assumed another key leadership role as senior vice president in charge of the group specialty markets division, where he had full profit and loss accountability for four businesses with a combined revenue of approximately one billion.
In addition to his MBA, Jim received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, where he also played football and lacrosse.
Chief Operating Officer
As chief operating officer (COO), Rich Macy leads all of the company’s operational areas and has profit and loss responsibility for the life, disability, and supplemental lines of business. With more than 30 years of experience, he oversees product management, technology, human resources, and service delivery. Rich works closely with the leadership team to formulate and operationalize business strategies that deliver value to Partners and the more than 27,000 groups and 2.7 million insured served by USAble Life.
Since joining USAble Life in 2012, Rich has been instrumental in identifying opportunities that leverage technology to improve business processes, deliver superior customer service, achieve scale efficiencies, and create competitive advantage.
Previously, Rich served as COO and chief information officer for Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) in Washington, D.C., the self-financed, quasi-government agency that acts as an insurer of private sector pension plans. Prior to PBGC, he spent nearly 20 years in leadership roles, including vice president and general manager at Automatic Data Processing Inc. in Roseland, N.J. (ADP).
Rich holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Columbia Business School and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from Wesleyan University.
Executive Vice President, Dental
As executive vice president, Ed Murphy leads USAble Life’s dental insurance business, which serves one million members and growing under the Blue Cross Blue Shield brand in Arkansas, Florida, and Hawaii. Since joining USAble Life in 2011, dental revenue has grown by 40%.
Ed has advanced the adoption of the company’s innovative medical-dental integration programs — Dental4Health® and LSV Connected Care® ― which improve overall health and well-being of members while driving down healthcare costs. He is a cofounding board member of the Harvard Initiative to Integrate Oral Health, which he helped establish in 2015. Ed continues to serve on the organization’s board and on the Dean’s Advisory Board of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Prior to joining USAble Life, Ed cofounded Dental Benefit Providers and served as its CEO. In 1998, he negotiated and oversaw his company’s acquisition by UnitedHealth Group (UHG). He served as chairman and CEO of Specialized Healthcare Services/UnitedHealthcare Dental, and served on the parent company’s executive council before retiring. In 2006, Ed cofounded Preventive Medicine, a health informatics company that developed a proprietary health and behavioral change model based on e-learning technology. Ed also served as a board member of the National Association of Dental Plans, serving as its chair for three years.
Ed is a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. and completed an MBA at George Washington University. He served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Chief Financial Officer
John Moran brings more than 25 years of experience in finance, capital management, strategic planning, and leadership to his role as chief financial officer (CFO) of USAble Life. As part of the executive team, he oversees the company’s finances, which includes budgeting and forecasting, risk management, and reporting.
John joined USAble Life in July 2018 from Swiss Re Group in Armonk, N.Y., a global provider of reinsurance, insurance, and other forms of insurance-based risk transfer. As CFO, John played a prominent role in leading acquisitions and growth strategy for Swiss Re’s life insurance start-up business, Life Capital Americas.
Prior to his work with Swiss Re, John served as CFO and leader of the life insurance division of Enstar Group Limited in Basking Ridge, N.J. As senior vice president and controller of central finance for HSBC North America in Jersey City, N.J., John successfully executed major acquisitions, dispositions, and growth strategies for the global banking and financial services company.
John was as a member of the senior management team of CareOne, a start-up senior care company in Fort Lee, N.J., with 56 properties in seven states. His expertise helped build The Multicare Companies Inc., an elder care services company based in Hackensack, N.J.
John earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and management from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. He is a graduate of INSEAD’s high performance leadership program. John is a certified public accountant (CPA) and a member of the American Institute of Public Accountants and the New Jersey Society of CPAs.
Chief Growth Officer
Daniel (“Danny”) Timblin is the Chief Growth Officer of Life & Specialty Ventures (LSV). He is responsible for helping LSV achieve our growth strategies – increasing ancillary penetration in our distribution partners and expanding our business to encompass additional markets, segments, and products.
Danny has extensive executive experience with both private and public sector growth companies, as well as broad insurance and health industry experience. Before joining LSV, he served in numerous executive positions at leading national brands, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Onlife Health, NaviNet, and Alvarez & Marsal.
Danny holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, studied at the London School of Economics, and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Georgia State University.
Executive Vice President, Partner Management
Julie Marshall develops and maintains collaborative, highly productive relationships with Blue Cross and Blue Shield Partners that enable consistent, profitable growth. While acting as a liaison between USAble Life and Blue Partners, she oversees the governance process in six states, including Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. Julie focuses on strengthening and leveraging relationships with key leaders of current USAble Life distribution partners and potential new Blue Partners that lead to mutually beneficial growth opportunities.
In her previous roles, Julie was executive vice president of marketing and sales for USAble Life. During her tenure, she also served as marketing director, helping build a supplemental product sales capability that allowed USAble Life to partner with Blue Plans to sell ancillary benefits.
Before joining USAble Life, Julie was regional sales manager for Arkansas Blue and Cross Blue Shield in Little Rock, Ark.
Julie is a business graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She holds the Chartered Life Underwriter designation.
Senior Vice President, National Group Sales
Chris Calos leads national ancillary group sales for USAble Life, including the sale of the company’s life, disability, dental, and supplemental products (accident, critical illness, and hospital). Chris leads a team of regional vice presidents and their teams, overseeing the proposal process, sales support, account management, and sales training. Since joining USAble Life in 2014, sales of USAble Life products have grown by 10.5%.
In addition to sales, Chris’s 36-year insurance industry career includes leadership of distribution, product development, underwriting, and marketing. Before joining USAble Life, Chris served in national executive leadership roles with The Guardian Life Insurance Company, Principal, and Assurant. His prior roles include executive vice president of AIG Employee Benefits, Protective Life Group Division and President of DentiCare.
Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
Vice President & General Counsel
As general counsel, Brian Black provides primary legal direction for USAble Life and
its parent company, Life & Specialty Ventures (LSV). His responsibilities include leading all legal and compliance work for LSV and its underwriting companies. In addition, he manages outside legal counsel, as well governmental affairs in support of LSV's Blue Plan partners.
After graduating from Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Va., Brian embarked on a legal career that has included positions with small and large firms, as well as in-house positions with the Sheet Metal Workers’ National Pension Fund in Fairfax, Va.
Immediately prior to joining the company, Brian was a shareholder at Ogletree,
Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart in Greenville, S.C. While at Olgetree,
his practice consisted primarily of advising clients regarding statutory and regulatory compliance and representing those clients before judicial and administrative bodies.
Brian brought more than 20 years of broad and varied legal experience to LSV in 2014 as part of the company’s leadership succession plan. He was appointed general counsel on July 1, 2018.
Brian is licensed to practice law in Arkansas, South Carolina, and Virginia, and is admitted to practice in numerous federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court. In addition to his law degree, he earned a bachelor’s degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
Brian is a veteran of the United States Army.
Vice President, Marketing and Strategic Planning
Andrew Hottell is vice president of marketing and strategic planning for USAble Life and its parent company, Life & Specialty Ventures. In this role, he drives analysis, discussion, and strategic decision-making related to LSV’s dental, life, disability, and supplemental products. He facilitates these efforts both within LSV and across the company’s equity and distribution partnerships. He works with internal stakeholders and external thought leaders to bring industry trends, issues, opportunities, and fresh insights to the leadership team.
Andrew is also responsible for the company’s marketing function, which
includes leadership of the in-house team that supports the company’s marketing, communication, and sales collateral needs across four brands and multiple partner markets.
Andrew joined USAble Life in 2016 as vice president of strategic planning. His background includes extensive experience in insurance and financial services, as
well as strategic planning, business transformation, organizational development, and management consulting.
Andrew earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University and holds a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
